What A Checkup Includes

Your checkup has a number of different steps, and our dental hygienists and Dr. Armando Reid will provide you with top-quality care in Leander to ensure that your smile is healthy and strong.

X-rays & cleaning

First-time patients will typically need to have x-rays taken so that Dr. Reid can fully assess their oral health, identify dental work like fillings, and more. We use digital x-rays for fast, accurate results. After your x-rays are taken, your teeth will be professionally cleaned by one of our hygienists at #TheSmileDoc.

Comprehensive oral exam

As your hygienist cleans your mouth, they will perform a basic oral exam to look for serious oral health problems. Then, when the cleaning is over, Dr. Reid will enter the room and perform a comprehensive oral exam to look for signs of gum disease and cavities.

Oral cancer screening

As part of your checkup, you will also get an oral cancer screening from Dr. Reid. He will look for issues like lesions, discolored patches of tissue, and other common signs of oral cancer. This gives you peace of mind after your appointment.

Gingival Pocket Exam

A gingival pocket exam is part of the oral exam that your hygienist and Dr. Armando Reid will perform at #TheSmileDoc. This exam is used to check for gingival “pockets,” that form as a result of gum disease.

If you have gingivitis (the first stage of gum disease), your gums may separate slightly from your teeth, leading to a “pocket” that forms between the gums and the tooth structure. This pocket will fill with bacteria, which will continue to attack the gums and the tooth.

Using a metal probe, Dr. Reid will measure the depth of this pocket, which should measure 1-3mm at most. A measurement of 4mm or more indicates the presence of gum disease, which requires specialized care like a deep cleaning (scaling & root planing) or laser therapy.

The Cleaning Process

To begin the process, your hygienist will quickly examine your mouth and probe your gums to perform an initial gingival pocket exam. Then, your teeth will be cleaned and “scaled” to get rid of plaque and tartar buildup. This buildup can’t be removed at home, so regular visits to #TheSmileDoc help keep your teeth shiny and healthy.

Then, your hygienist will use polishing paste and a high-speed polisher to buff and polish your teeth to remove surface stains and provide you with a clean smile. Once that’s done, they will continue by flossing between each of your teeth to remove any remaining particles and debris.

After this, your cleaning is over, and Dr. Reid will be called in to perform your oral exam and discuss his findings with you.
